As Volvo resurrects the V90 nameplate after an absence of more than a decade to complement the S90 sedan, which recently went on sale, it also plans to offer V90 Cross Country in the States starting in 2017. The V90 Cross Country will be the lifted and plastic-clad soft-roader that Volvo anticipates most buyers will pick anyway; those in the market for a regular V90 without the soft-road accoutrements can get one, but it'll take some extra steps.
That's right: Volvo dealers won't keep the nonlifted, unclad V90 wagon in stock, which means customers will either need to special order it using Volvo's online Concierge service or go through Volvo's overseas delivery program. The latter includes airfare to Sweden and delivery of the car at the factory in Torslanda before it's shipped back to the U.S.
To clarify, you can a) get the adventure of traveling to Europe to pick up a large Volvo station wagon, drive it around a bit and have it brought back home on a cargo ship, or b) visit your local luxury megadealer bookended by Best Buy and Olive Garden.
"Luxury buyers seek to fully customize their vehicle while enjoying a personalized experience," said Bodil Eriksson, vice president of product, marketing and communication. "The Volvo V90 attracts buyers who are determined to oversee every detail, and customer order production via Concierge allows them to realize this."
The volume-selling V90 Cross Country, meanwhile, will be here in time for the remainder of winter, with deliveries scheduled for first quarter 2017. Volvo has just published pricing for the V90 Cross Country, starting at $56,295 for the T6 AWD model.
The standard V90 wagon will be offered in front-wheel-drive T5 and all-wheel-drive T6 flavors in Inscription or R-Design trims, with the former using a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission good for 250 hp; the T6 will add a turbocharger and a supercharger to the same unit to squeeze out 316 hp.
Pricing for the standard V90 will be announced next month, with availability starting summer 2017; it shouldn't stray far from the starting price of the S90 T5 sedan.
For now, the V90 will be the only model that can be picked up through overseas delivery, though Volvo also offers the S90, XC90 Excellence and the S60/V60 Polestars through the Volvo Concierge ordering program.
